Choosing the right finance
What is the difference between invoice finance and a business loan?
By Chris Findlow · 21 July 2026
A business loan gives you a fixed lump sum that you repay over a set term. Invoice finance advances cash you are already owed against your unpaid invoices, and the facility grows as your sales grow. A loan suits a one-off need. Invoice finance funds an ongoing working-capital gap.
They solve different problems.
A business loan is a fixed sum, agreed up front, repaid over a set term with interest. You know the amount and the schedule on day one. It suits a defined, one-off need: buying equipment, funding a project, covering a known gap.
Invoice finance is not a lump sum. You draw forward cash you are already owed by releasing money against your unpaid invoices, usually soon after you raise them. Because the facility tracks your sales ledger, the amount available grows automatically as you invoice more. It suits an ongoing working-capital cycle rather than a single purchase.
Two practical consequences follow from that difference:
- A loan caps out; invoice finance scales. A fixed loan is a fixed number. An invoice finance facility rises with your turnover, so growth does not mean going back to reapply.
- They can work together. Plenty of businesses use a loan for a specific investment and invoice finance to keep day-to-day cash flowing. They are not an either-or choice.
In our own book, invoice finance facilities tend to run larger than loans within the same business, because they are funding the whole working-capital cycle rather than a one-off. If your cash is repeatedly tied up waiting for customers to pay, invoice finance is usually the better fit. If you need a set amount for a set purpose, a loan is cleaner.
